THE STORY BEHIND OUR BRAND | BABAFISHEES

Our story began in a spare bedroom in October 2018, when Baba Fishees was founded by Sarah Hubbard.

For as long as she can remember, Sarah has loved beautiful things. She has always been drawn to colour, creativity, abstract art, design and photography. Her love of animals started when she was very young and continues to inspire her today. Her love of expressive words, storytelling and a good sense of humour also keeps her motivated.

Design is not just a hobby. You could say, “It is part of who I am and what comes naturally to me.”

At Baba Fishees, we are deeply inspired by the African continent, its natural beauty, wonderful wildlife and flourishing fauna. We love Africa and all that it has to offer.

Beautiful, high-quality cottons are our mantra, not a negotiation. When we struggled to find prints we truly loved, we decided to commission, source and print our own fabrics — and wow, what fun we are having! We work with local South African knitting mills that have decades of experience in the cotton market.

We believe in building South Africa, one job at a time. Many of the challenges in South Africa are economic, and we believe that creating meaningful, well-paying jobs can make a real difference. We believe in paying our staff a living wage and are firmly against any form of exploitation, which is often seen in the clothing industry.

When considering the cost of a product, we encourage people to think about the time, fabric, printing, packaging and care that go into making it. If something seems too cheap, it is worth asking why.

In January 2022, another Sarah, Sarah Mordecai-Jones, joined Baba Fishees, so now we are two Sarahs. Sarah brings a wealth of experience in operations, project management, buying, sourcing and supply chain management. She has been instrumental in helping us work like a well-oiled machine. She studied interior design, retail buying and sourcing, and is also a mother of two little babes. As mothers, we understand the constant juggle of time, work and family.

Come and join us on this adventure. We hope to create pieces that become part of your family memories — the outfits you remember years later, the ones that make you say, “Oh, I remember when they wore that, and exactly where we were!”

May those memories stay with you, sustain you and make you smile.

We hope to hear from you soon.

With love and laughter,

Sarah & Sarah
